NEWS / Senate Finance Committee advance nomination of Donald Trump’s pick for new IRS chief

The Senate finance committee has advanced the nomination of Billy Long, a former Republican representative from Missouri, for his nomination as the new IRS Commissioner. The nomination is now headed for a vote by the US Senate.

While Long was overwhelmingly supported by Republicans in the finance committee, some Democrats, such as Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, accused Long of illegally selling fake tribal tax credits in exchange for paying off a campaign debt, according to KZRG News.

Republican Senator Mike Crapo countered the accusation by underscoring that Long’s tax consulting work took place as an independent contractor and in accordance with federal guidelines.

Long represented Missouri’s southwest 7th district, which included the cities of Springfield, Joplin, and Branson, between 2011 and 2023. He was a candidate to succeed Republican Senator Roy Blunt but lost the Republican nomination to Eric Schmitt.
