NEWS / NJ couple finally receive corrected marriage license after almost 2-year wait

A New Jersey couple is elated after finally receiving a corrected version of their marriage license, which they can now use to prove their matrimony. The couple had gotten married almost 2 years ago, but the original marriage had errors, so they had to resubmit their application.

Anne Cioffi and Anthony Lobosco had been together for 6 years and finally decided to tie the know when they found out that they were going to be parents. They did a quick courthouse wedding in Newark on May 17, 2024, but then discovered that their marriage license had the wrong date and wrong gender marker for Anthony.

Anne then tried to reapply for a corrected marriage certificate, first by calling the office, then by going in person, but was told that there was no record of her or her husband’s name.

The absence of an official document confirming their marriage created numerous financial problems for the couple, such as not being able to file joint taxes.

“I wasn't able to get onto her insurance, I'm paying more for my insurance,” Anthony Lobosco was quoted by ABC Eyewitness News 7 as stating. “And then any time I have to go to the doctor or anything, I'm paying more.”

Anne commented that she was not even sure if they can legally be considered to be married. She eventually made a post about her bureaucratic ordeal in a Facebook group for mothers in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Acting on a recommendation in the Facebook group, Anne contacted ABC Eyewitness News 7, who then reached out to the City of Newark to try to help Anne. The City of Newark stated that it was an “unfortunate combination of miscommunication and action and inaction by municipal, county and state agencies, with each entity having little or no awareness of a lingering problem within or outside their jurisdiction.”

The couple then finally received their long-awaited marriage license.
