The process of obtaining documents from official organizations (state, federal, etc) that have these documents on file, e.g. retrieval of official copies of certificate of incorporation, amendment, merger from state department; retrieval of official copies of birth, death, marriage certificates for Vital Records Offices; retrieval of official copies of Divorce decrees from Courts, etc.
