NEWS / South Carolina woman accused of altering sister’s death certificate to commit insurance fraud

A South Carolina woman is being charged with illegally modifying her sister’s death certificate to file a false insurance claim.

According to WYFF4 News, Linda Ann Bracey, 41, of Sumter County, is charged with presenting a false claim for insurance and forgery. The arrest warrant notes that Bracey’s sister died on February 19, 2024, and that an insurance policy in her name was purchased 3 days later on February 22.

According to the warrant, Bracey changed the date of death on her sister’s vital record to March 19, 2024, thus making it appear that she had passed away almost a month after buying the policy, with Bracey appearing to be eligible to receive a $90,000 insurance payout.

Bracey was arrested and booked into the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
