NEWS / Algeria set to join Apostille Convention

The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria is taking action to officially join the Apostille Convention. Having deposited accession instruments on November 5, 2025, the Convention is set to enter into force on July 9, 2026.

As part of the accession process, Secretary of State to the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge of the Algerian expat community, Sofiane Chaib, met with Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary General of The Hague Conference on Private International Law in September 2025.

The meeting “provided an opportunity to examine Algeria’s accession process to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Apostille Convention), signed in The Hague on October 5, 1961,” according to a statement quoted by AL 24 News.

The Secretary of State was also quoted by AL 24 News as stating that the initiative falls “within the framework of measures taken following instructions from senior authorities to facilitate citizens’ cross-border transactions and simplify the use of public documents outside national territory.”

Bernasconi responding noting that Algeria’s accession to the Convention will have a “positive and direct impact on individuals’ administrative procedures,” and underscored that The Hague Conference on Private International Law was ready to have the accession instruments deposited as soon as possible.

As of today, documents issued or notarized in the United States intended for use in Algeria need to be authenticated by the state in which they were issued, followed by the United States Department of State and the Algerian Embassy or Consulate. Once the Convention comes into force in July, it would be sufficient to simply get an apostille from the State in which the document was originally issued or notarized.
