NEWS / Michigan man sentenced to over 20 years in prison for murdering wife after receiving divorce court papers

A Michigan man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting his wife a day after his spouse had served him with divorce court papers. The couple had been married for only 6 months.

Marcus Lofton fatally shot his wife, Alicia Lofton, in August 2023. He was arrested, and the murder trial resulted in a hung jury. The case was then restarted, with Lofton agreeing to a plea deal with prosecution, pleading guilty to murder and felony firearms use.

“The first time I was introduced to him, I was snooping on my niece's page, and I saw her making candles with him,” Alicia’s aunt Jennifer Lee was quoted by WZZM ABC News 13 as stating in court in reference to her finding out about Alicia’s husband Marcus Lofton. “I didn't say I wasn't happy that she was in a relationship. I felt, feel weird. I never liked his demeanor when I seen videos.”

Lee also noted that Lofton had made a social media post admitting that he was a narcissist.

Alicia Lofton’s father Arthur Joseph also stated that he was not fond of Marcus Lofton from the get-go.

“My daughter introduced me to this guy one time, and I didn't like him from minute one,” Joseph stated. “I don't know if he understands how close he was to being a dead man. And right now, right now, I cannot stand being in this room with this bastard. And if it was up to me, he would not walk out of here.”

Joseph also noted that his daughter had hidden her marriage to Lofton as her family “despised his ass”. He also criticized the 25-year sentence, stating that he wished “he would only get one day, really, and let justice be served that way.” and calling the convicted murderer a “cowardly man”.

Marcus Lofton refused to speak in court, but his lawyer noted that “he’s been a bright, intelligent person, and...its shocks everybody, his actions of that day.”

Judge Scott A. Noto stated that he did have anything further to say, but noted that the victim’s father “said it best.”
