NEWS / American race car driver Kyle Busch had pneumonia for weeks before passing – death certificate


United States race car driving Kyle Busch suffered from bacterial pneumonia for “days to weeks” before his death on May 21 at the age of 41, according to his death certificate. The vital record was obtained in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, by The Associated Press.

The actual cause of death is listed as “hemorrhagic shock” and “disseminated intravascular coagulation”. The manner of death was listed as “natural”. The bacterial pneumonia the race car driver had eventually led to sepsis, which had a fatal outcome.

The death certificate also specified that Busch was cremated in Mooresville, North Carolina, after an autopsy.

Busch last raced on at the Watkins Glen International race track in Schuyler County, New York, on May 10 and thought he had a sinus cold. He said he needed a “shot” from his doctor, but nevertheless continued the race, winning the Truck Series race and finishing 17th in the All-Star race.

A week later, Busch attended the opening of a go-kart track with his son Brexton and began preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, when his family announced that he be dropping out due to a “severe illness”.

On May 20, Busch became unresponsive while testing in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, and was taken to a hospital in Charlotte. The unidentified caller that contacted 911 also stated that Busch was found lying on the bathroom floor but was awake. The caller stated that he had “shortness of breath”, was “very hot,” and was “coughing up some blood”.

Kyle Busch had been racing since the age of 16 in 2001. He won the Cup Series championship twice and had a record 234 races across NASCAR’s top 3 national series. His major victories came when he was with Joe Gibbs Racing, although he later joined Richard Childress Racing.
