NEWS / Jefferson Davis Hospital birth certificate errors persist; causing headaches for many

A defunct Houston, TX, hospital that closed down in 1989 made multiple errors in the birth certificates that it issued, which has been causing problems for the now adult natives of the facility. These individuals are now trying to correct the erroneous birth certificates they have.

“All the record changes and amendments are completed at the state office," Omar Salgado, Bureau Chief of Vital Statistics at the Houston Health Department was quoted by Fox 26 Houston as saying. "We ensure that individuals needing help can call customer service and verify their documents."

Salgado noted that amending birth certificates issued by a hospital that no longer exists can be somewhat difficult. He also stressed that the amendment is ultimately made at the state level, so the city has very limited control over the process.

Individuals may request birth certificate corrections by presenting school records or other living documents showing their current name. Another option is to request a name change through the Harris County Court.
