NEWS / Marriage in Colombia - Proof of freedom to marry

Each notary in Colombia sets their own requirements when it comes to marriage for foreign nationals. One such document is proof of freedom to marry. In the US this may be either one of the two a Certificate from State authorities or Sworn declaration. The sworn declaration, or Single Status Affidavit, is accepted by some notaries, while it is not by others. Some will require at least two witness to sign the affidavit along with the affiant. Some do not. It is ultimately up to discretion of the notary. The only item that is always constant is the Apostille. All foreign documents presented in Colombia must bear an official apostille.
