NEWS / DOI URGES WHISTLEBLOWERS TO REPORT EMBEZZLEMENT


DOI”), announced today that DOI is appealing to anyone with information about the theft and
abuse of City funds through nonprofit organizations or through the City Council’s discretionary
funding of nonprofit organizations to report that information to DOI by calling 212 825-5959. All calls
are confidential.
Yesterday, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and DOI announced an
Indictment charging two employees of a New York City Council Member with embezzling at least
$145,000 of City money through a scheme involving the nonprofit Donna Reid Memorial Education
Fund and City Council Discretionary Funds. The joint announcement of April 16, 2008 is attached.
DOI is one of the oldest law-enforcement agencies in the country. The agency investigates
and refers for prosecution City employees and contractors engaged in corrupt or fraudulent
activities or unethical conduct. Investigations may involve any agency, officer, elected official or
employee of the City, as well as those who do business with or receive benefits from the City.
