NEWS / IRS rules that nonprofit religious leaders can endorse political candidates

The US Internal Revenue Service made a legal filing allowing the leaders of nonprofit religious organizations to endorse political candidates without losing their tax exempt status.

The rule preventing non-profits from endorsing political candidates is known as the Johnson Amendment.

“The IRS has taken that to mean that if you endorse...or mobilize politically in any way, that you could lose your tax-free exemption that you get,” Legal expert Jeremy Rosenthal was quoted by KBTX as stating.

While the leaders of nonprofit religious organizations will now be allowed to endorse political candidates, they would only be allowed to do so during a service or "some type of group setting," according to Rosenthal.

Technically the Johnson Amendment will still remain in force and can be used to stop the purchasing of religious institutions and nonprofits.

Rosenthal went on to note that over 50% of Americans, including Republicans, are opposed or uncomfortable with letting nonprofits endorse political candidates.
