NEWS / Indonesia asks Egypt to join Apostille Convention

Indonesian Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas has asked Egypt to join the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, better known as the Apostille Convention, which simplifies the procedure for legalizing government-issued and notarized documents between its member states.

Agtas made the request during a meeting with Yasser Elshemy, the Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia.

“Some of our people study abroad, including in Egypt,” the Indonesian Law Minister noted, as quoted by the Antara Indonesian News Agency. “The Apostille service is highly needed for the legalization of their documents, and it will also make it easier for Egypt's citizens who need document legalization to go to Indonesia.”

Indonesia became a member of the Apostille in 2021, but is seeking membership in the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH). For Egypt, the situation is reversed, as Egypt does not recognize the Apostille Convention but is a member of the HCCH. Indonesia is also seeking Egypt’s support to become a member of the Conference.

“Indonesia is applying to become a member of the HCCH and the Service Convention,” Agtas stated. “We hope that Egypt can support us for this membership.”

Agtas and Elshemy also talked about increasing cultural and economic ties between the two regional powers. In particular, they discussed a possible agreement on intellectual property rights.
