NEWS / USPS to suspend document delivery Thursday, January 9, to commemorate President Jimmy Carter

The United States Postal Service will be suspending regular mail delivery on Thursday, January 9, for the National Day of Mourning to commemorate President Jimmy Carter, who passed away December 29, 2024, at age 100. US financial markets, including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will also be closed.

The day of mourning was announced by outgoing President Joe Biden in an executive order, issued on December 30. The order closed all federal agencies and offices on the day, which is usually treated as a federal holiday.

The USPS announced it will be suspending regular mail delivery and retail service as well as administrative office activity. At the same time, it will continue accepting commercial mailers at mail processing facilities. USPS offices will be flying their flag at half-staff in honor of President Carter.

Funeral services for President Carter, who outlived every other United States president, began Saturday, January 4, and concluded Tuesday, January 7, at the Washington National Cathedral. Carter, born 1924, served as the 39th United States President between January 20, 1977 and January 20, 1981.

The USPS previously suspended services for 1 day in December 2018 to commemorate President George H. W. Bush, who passed away on November 30 of that year.
