NEWS / Unilever to issue first-ever NFT marriage certificate for metaverse

It is now possible to obtain an NFT marriage certificate that would officiate a matrimony in the metaverse. Introduced by oral care brand Unilever, the NFT marriage certificate is now available in Decentraland, a 3D virtual world browser-based platform in which users can use cryptocurrency to buy virtual plots of land as NFTs. Virtual paramours would be able to tie the knot at the City Hall of Love, which was developed by Closeup, a company that has promoted marriage equality for decades and uses the virtual platform to circumvent racial, gender, religious, and caste-based limitations imposed by some real-world governments. After the virtual ceremony, an NFT marriage certificate is minted on the blockchain. Although NFT marriage certificates are not legally binding in any country, the experience still holds emotional significance for many couples and may be a precursor of the future of the marriage institution, which has experienced a profound change in the last century. Closeup hopes their virtual weddings will inspire real-life changes to legislation and promote marriage equality. “It is important that we normalize relationships like “ours” in every pocket of society,” Neil and Jad, the first couple to marry in Decentraland, were quoted by Augustman Singapore as saying. “We are very happy to be one of the first couples to experience this and share this moment with our friends.” Numerous companies, such as Samsung, Adidas, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Atari have purchased property and land in Decentraland. The platform has also hosted events such as the Metaverse Fashion Week, which featured brands the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfinger, and Estée, as well as concerts by Deadmau5 and Grimes.
