NEWS / UK man issued 2 death certificates to allegedly cover up hospital’s negligence – report

The family of a deceased man who had been issued 2 death certificates says that this occurred because the hospital was trying to cover up for their error that may have contributed to the man’s’ death. Brian Holmes passed away at Castle Hill Hospital near Kingston upon Hull in northeastern England following a complex type of heart surgery known as a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implant (TAVI) in 2019.

While the original death certificate included references to the surgery the hospital had performed, these references were later removed in the revised vital record. Holmes’s daughter Lisa Jones is claiming that this was done to “cover up what really happened”, according to the BBC.

The National Health Service (NHS) trust that runs the hospital noted that “it is uncommon for a death certificate to be amended following a discussion with the coroner’s officer.”

The BBC also reported about a number of other suspicious death that occurred in the aftermath of TAVI surgeries at the same hospital between 2019 and 2023. The total number of deaths linked to the surgeries was 11.

Humberside police also investigated the TAVI service at Castle Hill amid evidence that the hospital may have been trying to hide evidence that the surgery may have been linked to the deaths.

Holmes’s widow Susan stated that her now deceased husband decided to undergo TAVI thinking it would make a “new man of him”.

"They told us that the TAVI had got stuck, and then my husband ended up going into theatre and having a heart bypass,” she stated. “Then he haemorrhaged, and he ended up going back into theatre again. He was fighting for his life."
