NEWS / Texas County conduct to conduct last criminal record sealing program in 2023

Harris County, Texas, will be conducting its last criminal record sealing program for 2023 on November 11. The initiative, known as the Fresh Start Program, seals criminal records for misdemeanors when defendants successfully complete their probation.

“Many people thought if I completed the program, and I don't have a conviction, then it can't possibly be on my record,” Harris County Criminal Court at Law #9 Judge Toria Finch was quoted by Fox 26 Houston as saying, “We believe our role is bigger than just sitting on the bench every day.”

Finch noted that the program connects eligible individuals with professionals who can seal their criminal records for free. This could make it easier to apply for employment or obtain credit.

The program also includes a know your rights housing workshop that aims to educate both tenants and landlords about their rights when it comes to evictions.

“What we're trying to do is tell tenants and landlords about what their rights are to help them facilitate settlement before things get more dire,” Civil Court at Law #2 Judge Jim F. Kovach stated, “That eviction judgment, number one, is going to complicate your ability to get an apartment. That's why it's important to talk before their trial date when it's too late.”
