NEWS / Singer Sinéad O’Connor died from chronic pulmonary disease and asthma—death certificate

Sinéad O’Connor’s death certificate has revealed that the legendary Irish singer died on July 26, 2023, of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The revelation comes on the 1-year anniversary after the artist’s sudden passing in London.

According to a report from the Irish Independent, the death certificate for the late singer, registered by her ex-husband John Reynolds in London on Wednesday, July 24, revealed the exact cause of death to be chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The document, which got certified by Inner South London senior coroner Julian Morris, also states that the artist had been suffering from a “lower-grade respiratory tract infection”.

The cause of O’Connor’s shocking death had been a mystery until recently. In January, the Southwark Coroner’s Court stated that the singer had died of natural causes, but did not specify the exact cause of death.

The world-famous vocalist, best known for her 1990 cover of the song “Nothing Compares 2 U” (originally written by American musician Prince), was buried in the town of Bray (County Wicklow), Ireland in a ceremony attended by Irish President Michael D. Higgins as well as musicians Bono and Bob Geldof, with thousands of fans lining up the streets of the Irish town during the procession. The singer’s death came about 18 months after the suicide of her 17-year-old son Shane O’Connor.

O’Connor had been in the news a week prior to the death certificate revelation as the Dublin wax museum found itself in hot water after revealing a wax figure of the singer. O’Connor’s brother John came out stating that the figure was “hideous” and that it just looked “nothing like her”.

"When I saw it online yesterday I was shocked. I thought it looked something between a mannequin and something out of the Thunderbirds,” John O’Connor stated during an appearance on RTE Radio’s Livestream, as reported by The Independent.

The museum responded by agreeing to remove the wax figure to work on a more accurate representation of the late singer.
