NEWS / Secretary-General strongly condemns latest bloodshed in Iraq

11 May 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the spate of terrorist bombings and other attacks in Iraq yesterday that reportedly claimed the lives of over 100 people and injured many more, most of them civilians.

“The United Nations stands in solidarity with the Iraqi people in the face of these deplorable, unjustifiable acts,” the spokesperson for the Secretary-General said in a statement.

According to media reports, the city of Hilla in central Iraq was the scene of one of the bloodiest attacks when workers at a textiles factory were hit by two car bombs.

As bystanders and emergency services tried to help the wounded in Hilla, a suicide bomber detonated more explosives killing and wounding many more people. Gunmen had earlier opened fire in the capital, Baghdad, killing several policemen and soldiers.
