NEWS / Malaysian police verifying marriage certificate of couple whose baby was reportedly found in hospital freezer

Police are verifying the marriage certificate of a couple whose baby was reportedly found in the freezer of a private hospital in the city of Klang, located about 22 miles west of the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur. They are doing so by checking with the Islamic Religious Department in charge of maintaining marriage records in the country.

“To date, five individuals have had their statements recorded, including the parents, two doctors, and recently, a friend of the couple who took the woman to the hospital,” the police chief of Selangor, the state in which Klang is located, Omar Khan was quoted by New Strait Times as saying.

According to the baby’s father, the child was born with severe birth defects, including the absence of one eye, a nose, and an anus, and passed away minutes after his birth. However, he claimed that the hospital refused to release the baby’s body until its bill had been paid. An organization that provides affordable funeral services for low-income families then made a Facebook post about the situation that went viral.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Religious Affairs Na’im Mokhtar condemned the sharing of the footage of the deceased baby’s body on social media, stating that it could bring shame to their family. He also stressed the importance of referring to “Islamic authorities regarding funeral management to ensure everything is carried out properly and perfectly,” and called on the public to remain calm while the police and other agencies continue their investigation.
