Leader of Azerbaijani Society in Russian Belgorod Region Considers that Key Problem of Russian Azerbaijanis is Non-Legalization of Documents

27.09.2006

The key problem of Azerbaijanis living in Russia is the non-legalization of documents, the head of the Azerbaijani society of Belgorod region of Russia Sayadkhan Hasanov exclusively told Trend Special Correspondent in Russia.

???Lack of documents is the main problem emerging amongst Azerbaijanis living in Russia. It is possible to often meet men and women of declining years who do not own a birth certificate. Our children complete schools, professional schools and institutions and receive documents concerning their education, but they do not possess documents confirming their existence. Many Azerbaijanis have been living here since 1980 without relevant documentation. It is the key problem of Azerbaijanis and a solution is needed,??? Hasanov stressed.

The head of the Azerbaijani society stated that there are teachers and students in the higher educational institutions who are Azerbaijanis by nationality, but the number of Azerbaijani students among 22,000 Belgorod students equals 5-6. For instance, there are at least by 10 times more Armenians. In addition, he stressed that local Azerbaijanis are engaged mainly in trade, agriculture and construction. Hasanov considers that the Azerbaijanis working in markets are a benefit to the population. According to him, first they provide workplaces, secondly they import canned goods and plants never seen before and thirdly Azerbaijanis never interfere in the policy.

Hasanov emphasized that the fact that some Azerbaijanis work in the police force and in higher educational institutions positively affects the diaspora movement, but no Azerbaijanis are represented in management positions, for instance, in city administration or government power. He added that we need to retain our originality and national identity and increase the intellectual and cultural level of Azerbaijanis. According to him, for this purpose a newspaper of Azerbaijani diaspora of Belgorod region ???Ogni Vostoka??? is regularly published.

The head of the diaspora emphasized the absence of tolerance of the Belgorod population and the strong chauvinistic atmosphere of the population. However, any action by the Belgorod population against the Azerbaijanis will be dispelled by the diaspora together with law-enforcement bodies, he stressed.

According to official information, 4,500 Azerbaijanis live in Belgorod, but to each registered Azerbaijani there are 2-3 Azerbaijanis living illegally.
