NEWS / India cracks down on fake birth certificate operation

The government of the Indian State of Maharashtra has canceled over 3,500 fraudulent birth certificates that had been issued to Bangladeshi nationals.

State-level Vice President of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kirit Somaiya was quoted by online periodical Organiser as stating that over 8,500 birth certificates been issued in total. Somaiya claimed that the operation involved a number of Naib Tehsildars, or deputy land revenue officers, who do not have the legal authority to issue birth certificates. He stated that the illegally issued vital records will be revoked and called for strict action against individuals responsible for issuing fraudulent documentation.

The politician also alleged that the individuals with fake birth certificates had been involved in violent incidents in the City of Nagpur, the third-largest municipality in the State of Maharashtra.

53 individuals in 24 different locations in Maharashtra have been arrested, with an additional 38 individuals allegedly absconding.
