NEWS / CBP Seizes Almost 1,600 Pounds of Marijuana in Cargo Shipment

San Diego — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Otay Mesa cargo facility discovered 1,584 pounds of marijuana valued at $960,000 in a tractor trailer after it entered the country from Mexico.

Yesterday afternoon at about 12:30 p.m., a 35-year-old Rosarito man entered the cargo port driving a 1997 International tractor pulling a flatbed trailer with cargo manifested as cardboard scrap. A CBP officer developed information that prompted the officer to refer the conveyance to the secondary area for further investigation.

Officers ran the tractor trailer through the port’s gamma ray imaging system that showed anomalies with the cargo. Officers then unloaded the shipment and discovered a glass box filled with 47 packages of marijuana hidden within the bundles of cardboard.

The driver was arrested and transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. CBP seized the narcotics and conveyance.
