NEWS / CBP Officers in Buffalo Take Custody of Wanted Child Molester

Buffalo, N.Y. - U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations announce the apprehension of a United States citizen wanted in Illinois for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child.

On March 10, CBP officers received notification from Canada Border Services Agency that Mohammed Shakeel, a 48-year-old United States citizen from Niles, Ill., was being returned to U.S. authorities. Shakeel attempted to enter Canada on February 9, via the Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, but was detained by CBSA because of the active warrant. Shakeel was subsequently given an order of deportation from Canada and returned to the United States today via the Rainbow Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Upon his return to the United States, CBP officers conducted record checks which revealed that Shakeel was the subject of a no bond nation-wide felony warrant issued on May 15, 2009 by the Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Police Department. The warrant charges Shakeel with aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child.

Shakeel claimed he departed the United States in May 2009 from Chicago and flew to India to visit his mother. He then left India in November 2009 and flew to UAE to visit his sister and in January of 2010 he returned to India to visit his mother. In February 9, he departed India and flew to Toronto, where he was detained by CBSA.

CBP officers verified the existence of the outstanding warrant and confirmed the extradition. Shakeel was arrested by CBP and turned over to the custody of the Niagara Falls Police Department pending extradition to Illinois.
