NEWS / CBP Officers in Minnesota Capture Wanted Fugitive

Grand Portage, Minn. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Grand Portage port of entry arrested an individual from Pine City, Minnesota who was wanted for assault and drug possession in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota.

On February 9, a CBP officer at the Grand Portage port of entry referred Tommy Mattinas, 26, a Canadian citizen, who arrived in a 1998 Ford minivan for a secondary inspection. CBP officers conducted routine queries on Mattinas in the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) which indicated that Tommy Mattinas was wanted for failure to appear over a third-degree assault, and failure to appear over a fifth degree controlled substance charge in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota.

A Deputy from the Cook County Sherriff’s Office responded to the Grand Portage port of entry and took custody of Tommy Mattinas and transported him to the Cook County Jail in Grand Marais, MN pending extradition to Mille Lacs Country.

“The arrest of this fugitive by CBP officers demonstrates the dedication our officers apply to their mission on the frontline.” said Craig Kalar, CBP port director, Grand Portage.

During fiscal year 2009, more than 9,500 people wanted for a variety of charges, to include serious criminal crimes such as murder, rape, and child molestation were apprehended at CBP ports of entry.
