NEWS / Border Patrol Apprehends Smugglers, Seize Meth near I-5 Rest Area

San Clemente, Calif. — For the second time this week, U.S. Border Patrol agents seized a significant amount of drugs traveling northbound on Interstate 5.

Yesterday, Border Patrol agents seized crystal methamphetamine and apprehended two drug smugglers along a rest area on interstate 5. At approximately 4:45 p.m., agents on patrol noticed a blue 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 bearing California plates enter a rest area.

The agents interviewed the driver, a 25-year-old male United States citizen and the passenger, a 28-year-old permanent resident. After further questioning, agents asked to search the vehicle and were granted consent. During the search, a total to 11 bundles of crystal methamphetamine were found hidden behind the rear seats and in a near storage compartment.

The crystal methamphetamine had a total weight of 10.6 pounds and an estimated street value of $243,800.

The smugglers and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration; the vehicle was seized.

The U.S. Border Patrol maintains a defense-in-depth enforcement approach to prevent the smuggling of humans, drugs and other contraband into our country.
