NEWS / Border Patrol in Vermont Arrests Colorado FugitiveDerby Line, Vt. — On November 28, Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents located Glen L. Vigil near Derby Line, Vt., after he avoided the legal port of entry and crossed illegally into the United States from Canada. Law enforcement record checks revealed that Vigil, a 50-year-old United States citizen, has a nationwide outstanding criminal warrant from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office in Brighton, Colo., for six charges of sexual assault on a child and a $20,000 bond. While patrolling the international boundary, a U.S. Border Patrol agent noticed freshly made footprints coming from Canada and leading into a nearby wooded area. The footprints led the Border Patrol agent directly to Vigil who was hiding in the woods with his luggage. When asked by the agent, Vigil produced a Colorado driver’s license and stated that he had been born in Colorado. Vigil was transported back to the Newport, Vt., Border Patrol Station for further questioning and investigation. At the Newport Border Patrol Station, a check of law enforcement data bases revealed that Vigil was wanted in Colorado for a 2009 sexual assault on a child. Swanton Sector Border Patrol contacted Colorado authorities who verified that Vigil was in fact wanted and would face extradition back to Colorado. Vigil was turned over to the Vermont State Police and is currently in jail waiting extradition back to Colorado. Daniel B. Doty, chief patrol agent for Swanton Sector Border Patrol said that, “this is typical of the type of work done every day by Border Patrol agents not only in Swanton Sector but, across the nation to keep our communities safe. In this instance, an alert Border Patrol agent combined the ancient skills of tracking with modern law enforcement computer technologies to locate and identify a wanted individual.” http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/news_releases/11302009_2.xml |
