NEWS / Australian State to start issuing cartoon-character themed commemorative birth certificate


The Australian State of New South Wales will be issuing commemorative birth certificates featuring Bluey and his Heeler family, the main characters of the Australian preschooler-aimed cartoon show Bluey. The news comes 3 months after the New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages began offering birth certificates featuring the anthropomorphic koala Blinky Bill.

The commemorative birth certificate will cost less than the standard birth certificate but cannot be used for legal purposes.

“The commemorative certificates respond to customers wanting to celebrate the birth of their child,” New South Wales Customer Service Minister Jihad Dib was quoted by news.com.au as saying. “Commemorative certificates are a special way to show your love for a favourite character, have your name against your favourite footy team’s colours or to commemorate your heritage with one of our Indigenous art designs or Chinese Lunar New Year certificates.”

Bluey is an Australian cartoon TV show that began airing in 2018 and features Bluey, a 6-year old anthropomorphic Blue Heeler dog. She is known for her energetic and curious personality and lives with her family. The show aims to educate preschool children about family and urban life. The show is produced by the Ludo Studio, which is based in the State of Queensland, which has been issuing Bluey-themed birth certificates since 2020.

Since 2014, over 221,000 commemorative birth certificates have been sold in New South Wales. Many of them feature more adult-oriented themes, such as the Lunar New Year, Rugby teams, and Australian Aboriginal art.
