NEWS / Amended death certificate of MA State Police Academy recruit reveals he died from head injury

The amended death certificate of Massachusetts State Police Academy recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who passed away last September, revealed that the young man’s death was caused by “blunt impact injuries of the head” sustained during his training.

The amended vital record elaborated that Delgado-Garcia’s injuries resulted in intracranial hemorrhages, which, in turn, led to his death. The manner of death is listed as accidental. The certificate also lists perimyocarditis as a significant condition, albeit not an underlying cause, of the recruit’s death. The certificate was signed by the Worcester City Clerk, according to NBC 10 Boston.

Delgado-Garcia was hospitalized on September 12, 2024, a day after participating in a boxing training exercise at the academy. He later passed away, which resulted in an investigation of the academy. Many details of the investigation have stayed confidential.

Following the release of the amended death certificate, the Massachusetts State Police released the following statement:

The Massachusetts State Police remembers and honors Trooper Enrique Delgado Garcia as one of our fallen. His kindness, compassion, and dedication to the Department’s mission continues to inspire all who knew him from his time at the Academy and beyond. As we approach the first anniversary and continue our review of training practices, the Department shares the Delgado-Garcia Family's desire for a thorough accounting of the facts and circumstances of his tragic death. The State Police has fully cooperated with the ongoing review of this tragedy, and we await the findings of that independent inquiry.
