NEWS / Actress Diane Keaton died from bacterial pneumonia – death certificate


Actress Diane Keaton’s death certificate has revealed that the actress passed away from “bacterial pneumonia”. The late star’s death certificate was obtained by PEOPLE and also indicates that the actress’s body was cremated October 14, 3 days after hear death on October 11.

The death certificate also specifies that Keaton last saw a physician on October 9, just days before her death. She had bacterial pneumonia for a few days before her passing in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 79.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” Keaton’s family told PEOPLE in a statement. They went on to say that any donations to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a much appreciated “tribute” to the actress.

In a separate interview, Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager told PEOPLE that stunned by Keaton’s weight loss in her last 2-3 weeks.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Diane Keaton began her career on stage, most notably appearing in the original production of Broadway musical Hair in 1968, as well as Woody Allen’s comic play Play It Again, Sam in 1969.

Keaton went on to debut on the big screen with a small role in Lovers and Other Strangers (1970) before becoming famous for her role of Michael Corleone’s girlfriend Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather (1972), as well as the seminal movie’s sequels Part II (1974) and Part III (1990), opposite Al Pacino.

At the same time, the star continued to collaborate with Woody Allen in his film adaptations of Play It Again, Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), with the latter role winning her an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Keaton appeared in multiple other critically acclaimed movies, including Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), Interiors (1978), Manhattan (1979), Reds (1981), Shoot the Moon (1982), Crimes of the Heart (1986), Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991), Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993), Father of the Bride Part II (1995), The First Wives Club (1996), Marvin’s Room (1996), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), The Family Stone (2005), Finding Dory (2016), Book Club (2018), and Book Club: The Next Chapter (2023).

On television, Keaton took the role of Amelia Earhart in the film Amelia Earheart: The Final Flight (1994) and also appeared in the critically acclaimed series The Young Pope (2016–2016).

Keaton was never married and has 2 adopted children.
