FAQ / Why does Hispanic Heritage Month begin September 15?

September 15 was chosen as the starting point for Hispanic Heritage Month because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Hispanic Heritage Month is designed to focus national attention upon the contributions of Hispanics to American society. For more information, visit the link at USA.gov.
