NEWS / Foreign marriage requirements change constantly

Every once in a while a number of foreign countries would revisit their requirements towards the documents to be presented by US Citizen to marry a foreign national. Sadly, such requirements are only getting more stringent. If we look back ten years, the number of countries accepting the Affidavits and self-declarations that the applicant is free to marry was much greater than it is now. In fact, there are so few of them left, that you can practically name each and every one. Current issue, that those wishing to getting married abroad face, is that no all states provide marriage verification (free to marry certificate or negative statement of marriage / single status certificate) or some do not have up-to-date data. One of the recent examples is Denmark. The requirements towards documents requirement for marriage has been changed as of April 1, 2019. Now your status within Denmark or European Union as a whole will determine your eligibility and document requirements. The Danish government provides information in English for the applicants.
